How to play Harmonium

Beginning

1st of all you need to understand the keys of the harmonium or Piano (same principal). These are the combination of white and black keys.

All white keys are called Natural while Blacks are called Sharp keys.

Scales

So, after understanding and memorizing the keys combination you need to get familiar with the scales.

Broadly, there are 2 scales i.e. major & minor.

Major Scale (starting from C)

Minor scale

C D D# E G# A# C

Practice from different notes

As we know in one octave, there are 12 notes i.e.

C 

C# 

D 

D# 

E 

F 

F# 

G 

G# 

A 

A# 

B 

C (here, next octave starts)

Kindly note that, there is no sharp for E & B.

Now, you have to practice tha major and minor scales from different notes (i.e. starting from each note respectively). For more details you need to watch my lessons, link I have already provided.

Alanakar

After practicing the major & minor scales from all 12 notes, you need to practice few alankars. 

   Alankars are for making our fingers flexible and familiar with the instrument. And also, if you listen carefully while playing you will gradually get the feeling of music.

I have covered 46 alankars in videos and PDF, I have given in my Telegram group.

Thaat

Thaats are actually different scales in which raags are made. There are 10 Thaats in Indian music while 32 in Carnatic music.

After practising alankars in major and minor scales, you need to practice those same alankars in all these 10 thaats (2 are already covered ☺️).
